This set of 3 Mauchline Ware wood holders is in great condition. A highly collectible type of Scottish souvenir woodenware that flourished during the Victorian era.
Background & Materials Origin:
Manufactured primarily in the town of Mauchline, Scotland, from the 1820s until the early 20th century.
Wood: Crafted almost exclusively from close-grained sycamore wood, chosen for its pale color and smooth texture.
Finish: Coated with multiple layers of deep honey-toned varnish, which preserves the detailed designs and gives the pieces their signature warm patina. Unique Decorative Technique - The black ink illustrations printed on the front are transfer-printed vignettes. This technique allowed manufacturers to customize everyday items with landmark buildings, churches, and landscapes to sell to the 19th-century tourist boom.
Typical Functions
Mauchline Ware items were utilitarian objects elegantly hidden in souvenir casings.
Old decor is beautiful, unique and offers a more environmentally sustainable way to shop.
The decor I find for my store is in excellent overall condition… most pieces are old, some very old, and they can often show signs of their age and history. These are pieces for people who, like me, want their decor to tell a story; to be a little bit special.
All the antique, vintage and retro treasures you find are discovered by me locally and left in their original condition unless otherwise stated. This piece has been altered by myself
